Chairman Mimura's Comments Regarding the Results of the U.S. Presidential Election

8 November 2020

Mr. Joe Biden of the Democratic Party was nominated president-elect, after a fierce battle with Mr. Donald Trump of the Republican Party, in the U.S. presidential election held on November 3. Mr. Biden expressed his thoughts on raising financial resources for COVID-19 measures, expanding social security, and strengthening the climate change and energy policy system. I believe many Americans appreciated his comments on these points.

First of all, in order to overcome COVID-19 and its great impact on the whole world, it is important to execute the national strategy for dealing with COVID-19 that is stated in the pledge and return to the days when people can live with peace of mind. I hope for harmonious policy management in terms of both politics and the economy.

President Biden will tackle domestic challenges and prioritize bringing together countries in danger of division. However, in order to maintain the international order and restore the world economy quickly, I hope the new administration will restore relations with major countries and indicate that “the USA is back” by coordinating with international organizations, rejoining the Paris Agreement, participating in the CPTPP and maintaining cooperation with the free and open Indo-Pacific initiative.

In addition, I strongly hope that the relationship between Japan and the United States, which maintained good relations under the Trump administration, will be continued and developed under the new Biden administration.
